Don't Date Without Discernment: Let God Lead Your Love Story

One of the mistakes most people make is jumping into a relationship prematurely. Sometimes, we want something so badly that we don’t really take the time to invest, observe, and pay attention to the things that are trying to warn us about the decision we are about to make.

For example, we pray and ask God for a godly person, but we are entertaining people who, by their fruits, clearly don’t want anything to do with God. They have already shown us who they are and have no interest in changing. Yet we continue entertaining them, giving them access to our hearts, and then turn around and blame God when things don’t work out.

My personal advice to you is this:

While you are praying for a husband or a wife, also pray for discernment. Not everyone wrapped in a pretty bow is your future partner.

While you are waiting on God to reveal your husband or wife, also pray that He continues to work in you during your season of waiting.

When you meet someone, test them to see if their words match their actions. Give yourself time to truly get to know them, their friends, and their family. Meet them in public and watch how they treat people, especially in stressful situations. Invite them around your friends and pay attention to how they speak to them and how they treat them. Character always reveals itself over time.

Never stop praying. Pray for them and ask God to reveal what is in their heart and what their true intentions are. You will be surprised how quickly God will remove people from your life when you intentionally invite Him into your dating process.

Most of us forget that we serve a God who is alive and active. Why not include Him in one of the biggest decisions of your life when He is the only One who truly knows the human heart? The next time you go on a date, bring God with you. Before entering a relationship, ask Him for His blessing. From my own experience, I truly believe you have everything to gain.

At the end of the day, a relationship built without God's guidance will always require you to carry a weight you were never meant to carry alone. Don't rush the process because you're afraid of being alone. Trust the One who wrote your story before you ever lived it. God's timing is never late, and His plans are always better than anything we could choose for ourselves. The right relationship won't pull you away from God, it will encourage you to grow closer to Him. So be patient, guard your heart, and let God lead every step. The person He has for you will be worth the wait.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."  Proverbs 3:5–6
