When Faith Becomes Your Standard in Dating

When people ask me, “What are you looking for in a man?” I often smile.
It’s a question I’ve heard many times throughout my dating experiences. But if you had asked me that same question three years ago, my answer would have looked very different from what it is today.
Why?
Because somewhere along the journey of self-discovery and through growing deeper in my faith, I realized something important: my values matter more than any checklist I could create.
At one point, I probably would have answered that question with a long list of qualities. But today, my answer is simple.
A man of God.
Not because it sounds good, but because it reflects the life I’m building.

Why Values Matter More Than a List
My values are rooted in what I believe God wants for my life. They keep me aligned with my faith, my purpose, and the kind of relationship I want to nurture. If a man truly submits himself to God and cultivates a genuine relationship with Him, then many of the qualities I once tried to list naturally follow character, integrity, humility, love, and leadership.
And those are the things that truly matter.
Most of us have some kind of list when it comes to relationships, some lists longer than others. But one of the most important elements people often overlook is shared values.
You can have what looks like the most beautiful relationship on the surface, but if your values are not aligned, the relationship will eventually begin to crack under pressure.
Believe What People Show You
Have you ever heard someone say, “He’s not the same person I fell in love with,” or “She changed after we got serious”?
Sometimes people do change, of course. Life happens, people grow, circumstances shift. But sometimes the truth is much simpler, we just didn’t listen closely in the beginning.
If she told you on the first date that she doesn’t cook, don’t expect her to suddenly start preparing home-cooked meals every night.
If he told you he prefers to “go with the flow,” it may not be realistic to expect a proposal anytime soon.
One of the most important things we can learn in dating is this: stop reading between the lines and believe what people show you about themselves.
Clarity is a gift.
As believers, relationships require even deeper reflection.
Questions Worth Asking Yourself
When you think about the life you are building, ask yourself a few honest questions:
Does the person I’m considering align with my values? Are the things that matter most to me also important to them? Do they see my values as something to respect or as boundaries they want to push? Are they helping me build the life God is calling me toward, or slowly tearing it down?
These are not always easy questions to ask ourselves. But they are necessary ones.
Because the right relationship will never require you to compromise the values that keep you grounded in your faith.
And sometimes the simplest answer truly is the most powerful one.
For me, it’s this:
A man of God.
This is also one of the reasons I’m so passionate about creating intentional moments for couples. Through my company, we focus on helping couples reconnect, communicate, and build meaningful experiences together. Because relationships don’t grow by accident, they grow through intention.
I’m curious, what values matter most to you when choosing a partner? Have your priorities changed over time the way mine have?
